World Tourism Forum Lucerne, together with Korn Ferry and IATA, orchestrated and conducted personal interviews with 50 CEOs and other highly influential and committed aviation leaders globally as well as organised a concurrent global online study of millennial talents to evaluate how the aviation industry is rising to their career hopes and expectations. The results were formally announced at the World Tourism Forum Lucerne in May 2017 and the ensuing discussions serve as the basis for the now published Action Plan. This Action Plan is aimed at sharing simple actionable steps that can be adapted by the aviation sector to make it more attractive to the next generation of talent.

At the 5th World Tourism Forum Lucerne in early May, Tastemakers Africa (USA), Global Himalayan Expedition (India), Hello Here (Poland) and Bidroom (Netherlands) beat a combined total of 170 competing young enterprises to win the "Start-Up Innovation Award 2017" in their four categories. The competition was held within the framework of the Forum's first “Start-Up Innovation Camp”.

Some 450 specialists from 65 countries – representatives of tourism, economics, politics, finance and science – are assembling in central Switzerland for the 4th World Tourism Forum Lucerne. Over the next two days they will discuss changes and challenges facing the global travel and tourism industries. One of the keynote speakers is Jeremy Rifkin, Founder and President of the US-based Foundation on Economic Trends.




Sustainable tourism as an interesting market niche

Holidaymakers generally favour the idea of sustainable travel, but are not willing to pay significantly more for a “sustainable” holiday. This finding was confirmed in a study conducted by the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts in preparation for the World Tourism Forum Lucerne 2011. The study is based on the responses of nearly 5,000 Swiss customers of the travel operator Kuoni.

The second World Tourism Forum Lucerne – dedicated to the topic “Sustainability in tourism: Challenges, pathways and intelligent business models” and attended by 230 participants from around the world – drew to a close at the Swiss Museum of Transport in Lucerne. Besides a series of keynote addresses, the Forum centred on numerous interactive workshops, breakout sessions and a World Café, not to mention networking events at the highest level held throughout the three days. “We saw that it is essential for all stakeholders to work together if we’re going to make any decisive progress in the areas of sustainability and talent management”, concludes Martin Barth, General Manager of World Tourism Forum Lucerne. The event attracted 230 decision-makers from 30 countries to Lucerne, clearly surpassing the number and the importance of participants of the first event in 2009. The three-day Forum offered a comprehensive overview of trends and developments in tourism.

The second World Tourism Forum Lucerne got under way this afternoon with an opening event hosted by its General Manager, Prof. Martin Barth. The three-day international summit is fully dedicated to the topic “Sustainability in tourism: Challenges, pathways and intelligent business models” and 230 members from 30 countries have travelled to Lucerne to participate.
